چکیده

Cotton plants induce high levels of gossypol in response to herbivore damage. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which insect herbivory modulates gossypol biosynthesis in cotton plants. Here, we report the mechanism by which herbivore damage or insect-originated elicitors modulate the biosynthesis of gossypol and jasmonic acid (JA) in plants. Spodoptera exigua larval-damaged (HD) cotton plants and mechanically damaged plants treated with S. exigua oral secretion (MDOS) showed higher levels of gossypol and JA as well as increased transcript levels of genes involved in the biosynthesis of both secondary plant metabolites, compared to undamaged (UD) or mechanically damaged (MD) plants. In correlation with the observed induction of gossypol and JA, S. exigua larvae that fed on HD and MDOS cotton plants showed significantly reduced weight. The findings provide a better insight into the molecular mechanisms mediating herbivoreinduced plant defense. ARTICLE HISTORY Received 21 December 2016 Accepted 21 February 2017

Plant allocation to defensive compounds: interactions between elevated CO(2) and nitrogen in transgenic cotton plants.

Plant allocation to defensive compounds in response to growth in elevated atmospheric CO(2) in combination with two levels of nitrogen was examined. The aim was to discover if allocation patterns of transgenic plants containing genes for defensive chemicals which had not evolved in the species would respond as predicted by the Carbon Nutrient Balance (CNB) hypothesis. Cotton plants (Gossypium h...

De Novo Biosynthesis of Volatiles Induced by Insect Herbivory in Cotton Plants.

In response to insect feeding on the leaves, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants release elevated levels of volatiles, which can serve as a chemical signal that attracts natural enemies of the herbivore to the damaged plant. Pulse-labeling experiments with [13C]CO2 demonstrated that many of the volatiles released, including the acyclic terpenes (E,E)-[alpha]-farnesene, (E)-[beta]-farnesene, (...

Responses of Three Successive Generations of Beet Armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, Fed Exclusively on Different Levels of Gossypol in Cotton Leaves

The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an important pest of numerous crops, and it causes economic damage in China. Use of secondary metabolic compounds in plants is an important method used to control this insect as a part of integrated pest management. In this study the growth, development, and food utilization of three successive generations of S. exigua f...

Breeding and genetics Modifying gossypol in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.): a cost effective Method for small seed samples

cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and related species all contain gossypol, a polyphenolic compound that is an integral part of the cotton plant’s self-defense system against insect pests and possibly some diseases. gossypol also has been reported to have antitumor activity, medicinal effects, and contraceptive properties. However, the compound can be toxic to animals, which limits the usefulness ...
